Clyde Walkway bridge is also known as the Squiggly pedestrian and cycle bridge. It lies between Tradeston on the south bank of the river Clyde and Glasgow's International Financial Services District. This striking modern structure was opened 14 May 2009. It is considered a spectacular feat of engineering. The bridge has a very unique design. The bridge has an S-curved bridge-deck. Its upper side deck features a series of wave-like structures with stiff angularity verticals and appears brutally minimalistic. The bridge is particularly distinctive for its shape, which resembles a squiggle. It was designed to align with the river’s industrial past and to support Glasgow city’s waterfront regeneration development, with the objectives to improve accessibility across the river creating a landmark waterfront structure. The Squiggly Bridge is made of steel with concrete supports, with a length of 100 metres. The design of the bridge is based on the idea of a squiggle, hence its nickname. This bridge was fabricated, shipped & finally erected on site by RBG Ltd of Invergordon. BAM Nuttall provided the concrete piers on which the bridge sits. Commissioned by Glasgow City Council, the bridge was engineered by Halcrow Civil Engineers and Scandinavian architects Dissing and Weitling. |
