Glasgow Parks

Translated from Gaelic, Glasgow would be referred to as “Dear Green Place”.

It has an astounding amount of beautiful parks, gardens and outdoor spaces.

These green areas are located in Glasgow’s City Centre, along the Banks of the Clyde, which attracts wildlife, pleasure seekers and hobbyists.

Kelvingrove Park spans the banks of the River Kelvin and was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton.

Sir Joseph Paxton, 1803 to 1865, is known for being an English Gardener, an Architect and Member of Parliament. He designed the Crystal Palace, a cast-iron and plate-glass structure erected in Hyde Park London, which housed the Great Exhibition of 1851.

More botanically, he cultivated the Cavendish Banana, the banana we all know of and buy today. When working at Chatsworth House as Head Gardener, Paxton built the famous Emperor Fountain in 1844 and while at Chatsworth, acquired a real passion for greenhouses.

Paxton published many botanical books and magazines, and in particular ‘The Gardeners' Chronicle’.

In addition to Kelvingrove Park Glasgow, Paxton worked on many other public parks and cemeteries in Liverpool, Birkenhead, Halifax, Coventry and Scarborough.

Surprisingly Paxton’s affluence originated by speculating in the Railways industry.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a large Locharbriggs red sandstone building located within Kelvingrove Park, which straddles the banks of the River Kelvin. The Museum and Art Gallery is a free-to-enter attraction, offering many delightful works of art and artefacts, most notably its fine collection of arms and armour.

The Art Gallery and Museum was built in the Spanish Baroque style and matches the style of Kelvin Hall, now a sports arena, which is prominent on the opposite side of the road to the Museum.

Originally known as the Palace of Fine Arts, Kelvingrove was designed by Sir John William Simpson and Edmund John Milner Allen, being first opened in 1901.

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum was partly financed from the 1888 Exhibition, which was held in the Park.

West End Park Glasgow

Originally called the West End Park, the grounds of Kelvingrove Park cover some 85 acres through which the River Kelvin flows.

The landscapes were laid out by Sir Joseph Paxton.

Glasgow Council purchased the land for approximately one-hundred thousand pounds, in 1852.

It was primarily meant for the enjoyment of the population of the expanding City of Glasgow.

Exhibitions In The Park

There have been three major exhibitions held in the parkland.

·         The Glasgow 1888 International Exhibition;

·         International Exhibition in 1901; and

·         1911 Scottish Exhibition.

Kelvingrove Park Uses

Located near to many University of Glasgow’s buildings, the Park serves as a favourite walkway to Glasgow City Centre.

The Park is a great place to relax and for walking dogs.

Kelvingrove Park has many features of note, including a skate-park, bowling green and croquet lawn. Additionally, the River Kelvin walkway offers much interest for nature lovers.

Kelvingrove Park Bandstand

The bandstand was designed by James Miller and erected in 1924. Over the century it has been popular for music concerts and gatherings, latterly falling into decline, before renovation by Glasgow City Council in 2014. The Bandstand is now surrounded by its own amphitheatre.

The Doulton Fountain, now located in front of the People’s Palace, was originally sited by the Bandstand near to the River Kelvin

William Thomson was a renowned physicist and after whom the Kelvin temperature scale is named, which determines the temperature of Absolute Zero.

At the University of Glasgow Lord Kelvin undertook his important work through the mathematical analysis of electricity. This helped him formulate the laws of thermodynamics, and subsequently significantly influenced physics, in its modern form.

Thomas Carlyle 1795 to 1881 was a Scottish philosopher, satirical writer, essayist, historian, teacher, mathematician and controversial social commentator. He was born in Ecclefechan near Lockerbie, 77 miles South East of Glasgow.

The monument of Thomas Carlyle is sculpted out of three massive blocks of grey granite.  The granite was sculpted by William Kellock Brown, a prominent Glasgow late-Victorian sculptor. It is unusual in that Carlyle's head, shoulders and arms emerge from the coarsely cleft stone.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler

Thomas Carlyle apparently had no particular link with Glasgow.  However, Thomas Carlyle asked American-born painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler to paint his portrait after having seen Whistler's portrait of Whistler’s mother in the artist's studio.

Whistler’s Ward, Rosalind Birnie Philip to whom Whistler’s estate was bequeathed, gifted and bequeathed Whistler’s art collection, to the University of Glasgow. Glasgow is believed to have been chosen for several reasons.

·         Whistler had Scottish ancestry.

·         The ‘Glasgow Boys’ were an informal alliance of some 20 artists in the early 1880s. Inspired by Whistler, they challenged the style of the late Victorian Scottish painters. Whistler supported the ‘Glasgow Boys’.

·         In 1891 the Glasgow Corporation purchased the portrait of Thomas Carlyle.

·         The University of Glasgow awarded Whistler the honorary degree of Doctor of Law.

The purchase by Glasgow Corporation became a major turning point in the struggling Whistler's career. It may have been a major factor for the bequest of the Whistler’s estate to the University of Glasgow, many years later.

It fails to explain why Glasgow Corporation, chose to erect the monument in Kelvingrove Park to Thomas Carlyle.

Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts’ Statue

Field Marshall Earl Roberts of Kandahar’s equestrian statue is situated in the park near to Glasgow University and opposite Park Gate. He is best known for his role associated with the brutal put-down of the ‘Indian Mutiny’, when the Indian Soldiers, Sepoys’ revolted in India, between 1857 and 1858.

One of the buildings at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, which houses cytopathology, microbiology and pathology departments is named after him, in recognition of Lister’s work at the hospital.

Lister successfully introduced carbolic acid, now commonly known as phenol.

Joseph Lister’s efforts led universally to a reduction in post-operative infections, resulting in making surgery safer for patients. He also served as a professor of surgery at the University of Glasgow.

Interestingly, Listerine mouthwash was named after Joseph Lister, for his work in antisepsis, which also serves as another enduring tribute to his achievements.

The statue is carved in sandstone and represents a weary trooper on scouting duty.

The carving was paid for by subscriptions from rifle brigades throughout Scotland. It was erected under the supervision of Alexander Beith McDonald, the City Engineer at the time, and James Whitton, the Superintendent of Parks, both of whom were acting on behalf of the sponsors of the pedestal’s base and site, Glasgow Corporation.

The monument was officially unveiled by the Regiment's Colonel-in-Chief, Field Marshall the Duke of Connaught, 28th September 1906.

The Stewart Memorial Fountain was installed in 1872 to acknowledge the achievements of the Lord Provost, Robert Stewart, particularly for getting fresh water to the City of Glasgow from Loch Katrine, some 40 miles away.  Constructed of granite, sandstone, marble and bronze, the ‘Lady of the Lake’ statue towers over Stewart Memorial Fountain.

Robert Stewart

Robert Stewart, was a wealthy ironmaster and served as Lord Provost between 1851 and 1854.

The substantial waterworks at Milngavie, north of Glasgow, are still in very good condition today, from where the water was routed through into Glasgow for Stewart’s Loch Katrine water scheme, now owned by Scottish Water.

The gravitational flow to the Milngavie water treatment works, is via two 26 mile long aqueducts and 13 miles of tunnels. Milngavie’s elevation provides adequate water pressure to the majority of Glasgow, without the need for pumping. Up to fifty million gallons a day, can be provided from this water reservoir system.

Queen Victoria opened the works in 1859.

Stewart’s water scheme resulted in very pure `soft` water being supplied to the city in lead pipes. This resulted in widespread lead poisoning of the Glaswegian population. It was a century later before being identified as a real problem and has subsequently been rectified.

In tribute to Stewart the Fountain’s plaque inscription reads:

“To commemorate the public services of Robert Stewart of Murdostoun Lord Provost of the City of Glasgow from November 1851 till November 1854 to whose unwearied exertions the citizens are mainly indebted for the abundant water supply from Loch Katrine. This fountain was erected 1872.”

Loch Katrine is a freshwater loch in the district of Stirling, Scotland and is also a popular nature area, with many tourist visiting the Loch for its scenic landscapes.

Loch Katrine is also the setting for the Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Lady of the Lake’, which is an integral part of the Stewart Memorial Fountain’s statues.

James Sellars

The Fountain was designed by Scottish architect James Sellars, who was born in the Gorbals in Glasgow. Sellars was influenced by Alexander Thomson and also designed the St. Luke's Orthodox Cathedral and Kelvinside Academy.

James Sellars transformed the Kelvingrove area into an ‘Arabian Nights’ fantasy.

Bridges in Kelvingrove Park

The River Kelvin may be crossed by the bridges that transverse the river.

Snow Bridge

The Snow Bridge c1800 is thought to be the oldest surviving river crossing, downstream from the Kelvin Aqueduct at Maryhill. Constructed in sandstone, it has three arches over the river and another, smaller arch over the old Bunhouse Mill lade.

Prince of Wales Bridge

The red sandstone and granite bridge was erected c1894, to replace an earlier wooden bridge.  The new Prince of Wales Bridge was designed by Alexander Beith McDonald, with a single elliptical arch, which spans 12 metres over the water.

Kelvin Way Bridge

Alexander Beith McDonald single-arch red sandstone bridge was completed in 1914, although outbreak of war hindered embellishments. In March 1941 the bridge was badly damaged by a landmine during the Clydebank Blitz. Some statues were blown into the river, where they lay for many years until being retrieved.

When setting out to write this webpage, I had intended to write about other Glasgow parks. However, once I started researching the history of Kelvingrove Park became fascinated how rich its history was. I therefore chose to elaborate a little about the people with a link to the Park and Art and Museum.

Whilst visiting, I found that there was much to absorb and to photograph. All of which gave me great pleasure.

The art masterpieces were delightful. The museum’s wide range of artefacts were fascinating.

Whilst there the organist was playing the enormous concert pipe organ. The melodic sound tones of the organ, was an unexpected real treat.

As the photograph show the building is large spacious and well laid out.

I did spend a little time walking the grounds of the Park taking photos.

However, walking around the large Art Gallery and Museum first had been tiring in itself. So another visit on another day might have been better planned by me.

Allowing plenty of time to cover all there is to see, would be wise.

The sculptures of people inside the Art Gallery and Museum were plentiful, showing how many rich and talented people there has been living and working in Glasgow, over the centuries. Glasgow has always fostered and attracted ability, facilitating people to achieve great success in many fields of specialisation, research and enlightenment.

It is a wonderful place to visit.

Those living there today, have much to live up to, to maintain Glasgow’s high academic and innovative reputation.

Writing this article has been a great reminder to me of what I had seen when there. I had much fun exploring whilst at Kelvingrove. I can recommend it to you as a place to visit, when in Glasgow.

There are many photos of what is at Kelvingrove in my book ‘Glasgow Landscapes’ for you to enjoy.

I hope this article temps you to buy my photographic book, which is available in many formats from Amazon and other good book sellers.
