Winter Gardens Glasgow
The Winter Gardens extend from the rear of the People’s Palace’s building, both of which are located on Glasgow’s famous Green.

The Gardens have been sited there and open to the public, since the construction of the People’s Palace in Victorian times, circa 1898.
Over the years, it had fallen into disrepair, however was revived and restored from Heritage Lottery Funding and other grants, to its splendid magnificence of today.

The Winter Gardens is four times as large as the building, which houses the Social History Museum of the People’s Palace. This makes it a world-class sized greenhouse.

It is believed that the glasshouse was designed in the inverted shape of Nelson's ship H.M.S. Victory.
The glass adorns the steel framed curved roof, which is resting on cast-iron columns.
Normally accessed through the main entrance to the People’s Palace, the Winter Gardens also have side entrances to the glasshouse.
The Glasgow Winter Gardens are used to host many functions, including weddings and musical concerts. Due to its fragile nature, high winds and rain and other adverse weather conditions, may on occasions spoil the enjoyment. However, when the sun shines it is delightfully warm, airy and light.

The Winter Gardens are split into two distinct areas. The botanical plants and tree area, with water features and the entertain arena and café.

Strolling around the garden area reveals many exotic tropical plants and rare species, together with displays of artistic forms, relaxing seats, which are given shelter from the sunshine under the shade of tall palm trees. The plants and trees all thrive under the protected climatic conditions.

Glasgow has a plethora of elegant Victorian glasshouses spread around the city, in its many parks. The Winter Gardens behind the rear of the People’s Palace are one of the finest, and is most enjoyable to visit.

During my time at the Winter Gardens, I very much enjoyed looking at and taking photos of, the notable plant species.
To find this delightful area, hiding behind such an imposing building as the People’s Palace and the Doulton Fountain, was a real treat.

The Winter Gardens structure in its own right, gives you a great reason to travel to Glasgow Green. It glistens in the sunlight, no matter what perspective you view it from.
